DEFINITIONS:
MULLEN TEST - The making of corrugated packaging requires the
combining of different basis weights of the liner
(the outside surfaces) and medium (the wiggly part in the
middle) to meet a Mullen or bursting test that will handle the
job of containment. Example, 200 test board is the use of
2-liners that must equal a combine to a total of 84lbs of basis weight
(most commonly two 42lb liners are used)
BUSTING STRENGTH - In case you were wondering, bursting strength
is the strength of a material expressed in pounds per square
inch.
ECT (Edge Crush Test) - In short, it is the amount of
pressure a board/carton can withstand before the edges collapse.
In length, ECT is the edgewise compressive strength, parallel to the
flutes of a short column of corrugated fiberboard. Test results are
reported as the "pound-force" per inch
required to cause compressive failure. ECT correlates directly to box
compression strength.
