What is the difference between 32 ECT and 200#  burst test ratings?

Corrugated boxes are made of cardboard with an
inner sheet a corrugated middle and an outer sheet.
32ECT boxes have paper thicknesses of 33, 23, 42
200# TEST boxes have paper thickness of 42,26,42
Therefore, Paper Mart believes that 200# test cartons are
heavier and superior to 32ECT cartons and will stand up in shipping better.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SUBJECT

HISTORY:

In  the early 1900's there began to become standardizations and later there was a Consolidated Freight Classification system introduced. The corrugated industry adopted the MULLEN testing method to test the bursting strength of cartons.

In the middle of the 1970's  companies started to review the standards and started to design boxes based merely on performance.  Due to this, the corrugated industry introduced a new measurement standard known as ECT (Edge Crush Test).

The reason Paper Mart has not changed to this board is that ECT is made up of more recycled fibre which makes for a  slightly more "flimsy" box.

DEFINITIONS:

MULLEN TEST - The making of corrugated packaging requires the combining of  different basis weights of  the  liner (the outside surfaces) and medium (the wiggly part in the middle)  to meet a Mullen or bursting test that will handle the job of containment.  Example, 200 test board is the use of 2-liners that must equal a combine to a total of 84lbs of basis weight (most commonly two 42lb liners are used)

BUSTING STRENGTH - In case you were wondering, bursting strength is the strength of a material expressed in pounds per square inch.

ECT (Edge Crush Test) - In short, it is the amount of pressure a board/carton can withstand before the edges collapse.  In length, ECT is the edgewise compressive strength, parallel to the flutes of a short column of corrugated fiberboard. Test results are reported as the "pound-force" per inch required to cause compressive failure. ECT correlates directly to box compression strength.
